ABOUT ME

I have worked for 8 years in strategic communications roles, always with a focus on policy, research and engagement. Now, I am seeking full time or freelance opportunities to directly shape a just energy transition, building on my academic grounding and personal interests, pursued through collaborations and volunteering with Community Energy England and Bristol Energy Network.

I hold an MRes in Sustainable Futures from the University of Bristol, an MSc in European Public Policy from University College London and a BA in French and Russian from the University of Bristol.

I am also a trustee of climate action charity Protect Our Winters UK, and spent the first 6 months of 2026 travelling in my van through the French Alps, Italy and Northern Europe.

TESTIMONIALS

"Katy is an intelligent and wise strategic communicator and is brilliant at thought leadership, understanding how to position clients in important conversations and connect them to matters that matter. Katy has led our expertise in ESG communications and has done a lot of work to educate and upskill her colleagues. Katy also led our business efforts to focus on the triple bottom line, leading the process that secured us B Corp accreditation. Katy is a very conscientious mentor and manager, bringing on junior staff members and supporting their professional development. Katy has played a key role in many new business pitches and she has moved seamlessly between providing senior counsel to key clients and project management expertise. Katy has strong personal values but is also a pragmatist and a team player. I would highly recommend Katy and we wouldn't hesitate to welcome her back to our team."

“Working with Katy Barney on this research and report has been a pleasure. She grasped the brief immediately and contributed creatively to expanding its reach and remit to include a European perspective. She consulted concisely at every stage and took suggestions. She arranged and designed all the interviews and conducted them effectively in a way that the interviewees seem to have found conducive. She conducted the sign-off process with interviewees and the draft report is clear and admirably concise. We would be very happy to work with Katy on similar work in the future.”
